Sierra de Bahoruco

Trekking in the tropical mountain forest with its typical flora and fauna

Eco-adventure of 3 days (2 nights) to discover the Sierra de Bahoruco with its typical flora and fauna.

During this adventure you will spend one night in the National Park in the village of Cachote, in the middle of the cloud forest. You will share your meals with the communities of the mountains and arrive in the only town of the Sierra de Bahoruco: Polo. Enjoy the landscape of the Sierra, its forests, small trails, great biodiversity and its magnificent views.

Be an explorer for a day, in this completely unspoiled place.

In addition, Jaragua National Park is a habitat for numerous native and endemic birds and migratory birds. More than 130 bird species have been reported in the park, 76 are permanent residents, 10 are endemic and 47 are migratory.

Drive from your hotel in an ECOTOUR vehicle to Paraíso, a village between the mountains and the Caribbean Sea.

The hike begins on the "Café de las Mujeres" trail, passing through agricultural fields and coffee plantations. Enjoy lunch in the small community of Charco Blanco (900 m elevation gain). Continue hiking to the cloud forest of Cachote (1100 m), an enclave of Bahoruco National Park (Biosphere Reserve).

Visit the botanical trail and fish pond. At the end of the day, enjoy a meal with the villagers and enjoy the unique fresh climate of the region before the sounds of the mountain lull you to sleep. Overnight stay in a refuge or tent. Hiking time 6 hours, altitude 1100 m (uphill), high difficulty.

Walking time 7 hours, elevation gain of 700 meters (uphill, downhill), medium difficulty.

After a big breakfast, set off in the direction of Polo. Walk along a flower-strewn path to the Cortico River (300 meters), then uphill to the small village of Auta. The magnificent view will draw you to the opposite slope of Sierra Bahoruca and to La Mina (an old silica mine). Short break at the house of a Montea Nueva family (1000 m).

Continue hiking downhill towards Polo, passing an eerie prison built by Rafael Trujillo, dictator of the Dominican Republic from 1930 to 1961. Wait at the road leading to the only town in the Sierra Bahoruco for the bus that will take you uphill to Polo. Enjoy a warm welcome and home-cooked dinner by Mama Gueda, the leader of the village cooperative. Retire in the evening to your nightly quarters in a house, hotel or shared dormitory.

Hiking time 5 hours, elevation gain 900 m (downhill), low difficulty.

After breakfast, hike up the "Caña Brava" (200 m) and enjoy a great view over the valley that will lead you to Paraíso. Descend to the "Mata de Maíz" basin (700 m). This is the source of the "Rio Nizaito", a river whose course we will follow for the rest of the day.
