Laguna de Oviedo - Flamingo Island
Laguna de Oviedo - Flamingo Island
Discover another treasure of Jaragua National Park: Laguna Oviedo.
Among the country's many attractions, Laguna Oviedo is the best place to observe the Dominican Republic's most beautiful waterfowl.
It consists of more than 40 islands that are home to herons, starlings, golden spoonbills, frigatebirds, white egrets, pelicans and, of course, red flamingos.
After a boat ride, enjoy your lunch on one of these small islands. The vegetation is dry and consists mainly of cacti. Two species of iguana live here: the rhinoceros iguana and the Ricord iguana. Although their size may seem overwhelming, they are absolutely tame animals.
After lunch, we will hike across this desert island to the Mirador, a viewpoint with breathtaking panoramic views of the lake, the Caribbean Sea, the entire Jaragua Park and the surrounding Sierra de Bahoruco mountain range. After a walk, through the dry thicket, we invite you into the world of the native herons. Where the river flows into the lagoon, many fish attract the birds.
