Garden of eden
Garden of eden
Our hike starts in the village of Ojeda on the south coast of Barahona, on a large farm.
At this farm, all you have to do is reach out your hand to pick and enjoy avocados, oranges, lemons, mangoes, papayas, sapotes, guavas, passion fruits and many other types of fruit.
After a two hour hike uphill we stop at a mirador (lookout point) with a breathtaking panoramic view over the villages of Los Patos, Ojeda and Paraíso, the river Riosito and the high mountains of Cachote. Continue uphill to the village of Bario Nuevo, founded by a Haitian family who produce coffee in the middle of the cloud forest.
In the afternoon (after lunch) we cross several coffee plantations on the mountain top before we climb all the way down to the gorge of the Riosito river. Where the path meets the river, you can take a dip in a royal natural pool. The site is also a popular playground for local children. Finally we follow the river downhill to Paraíso village.
