Cachote - Mountain Village & Cloud Forest
Cachote - Mountain Village & Cloud Forest
Today you will discover the eastern part of the Sierra Bahoruco with its peculiar rainforest in the mountain village of Cachote. You will be picked up at your hotel around 8:00 am by an off-road vehicle. You can sit inside the vehicle or on the open back seat. Once in La Cienega, you will leave the paved road and begin an ascending route on dirt roads. Halfway up the road, you will stop at a local family that grows their own produce. On their land you can find coffee, cacao and bananas, among others. You will learn more about the cultivation and processing of these products and have the opportunity to taste them. Afterwards, the route continues to Cachote.
As the altitude increases, it becomes more and more foggy and the temperature drops. Upon arrival in Cachote, you will take a 30 to 45 minute walk in the forest. Afterwards, you will have the opportunity to have a picnic at a local resident's home. Since there is only one elementary school in Cachote, many residents have left the village with their older children to seek prosperity in more civilized villages. If weather conditions are favorable, take a different route on the way back, crossing the "Nizaito" river. If the water level is too high to cross the river, we will take the same route as above to return to the hotel.
